Activities for Depression

Depression can make you feel sluggish and put exercise way down your priority list. Ironically, regular exercise is a great mood booster, and can significantly improve symptoms of depression. If it’s been a while since you’ve exercised, introducing it gradually is key.

Exercises that can help fight depression:

Yoga

Yoga has the benefits of improving flexibility, and increasing strength. It can be a wonderful distraction from negative thoughts.

Tai-Chi

The slow, gentle movements of this Eastern school of exercise can assist you in breaking free of depression. The fact that Tai Chi is often done in groups adds a social element that many depression sufferers find helpful.

Walking

Walking is the easiest way to break free from a sedentary lifestyle. Depression often leaves you by yourself with only negative thoughts to keep you company. Instead, grab a jacket, head outside and stroll in the fresh air. You could even call on a friend to keep you company.

Outdoor Activities

Gardening, tossing a ball around with your kids or grandkids, and sweeping leaves are all things that will get you out of the house and more importantly, out of your head. Exposure to the sun can also stimulate your serotonin levels, making you feel happier overall.

Running

Running causes a release of endorphins in the brain, which act as a natural type of morphine, producing a sense of joy and well-being. This can be a very effective remedy for a low mood.

Weight-Lifting

Seeing your body become healthy and chiseled is a great feeling. Start slow, and consult with a personal trainer if necessary.

Feelings of depression often coincide with the dark winter months. Trying each day to get 30 minutes of daylight exposure, preferably whilst on the move could help to lift your mood.
